Bianco-sopra-bianco
Enamel decoration, also called marseille. Italian for ‘white-on-white’. Term primarily used on Italian majolica wares denoting painting in opaque white over a grayish white ground, used at the Faenza potteries in the early 16th century. The term is also used to describe this technique on English mid to late 18th century Lambeth and Bristol tin-glazed delftware or pottery.
On Chinese export porcelain it occurs as an additional decoration often alongside more colorful famille rose decoration. Unusual as a single enamel but occurs together with for example only blue, well into the mid 19th century.
