Sharing with you this square teapot with blue and white decoration

Around 1700. H. 14 cm. (Rs)
The decor is inspired by an engraving of Le Clerc for The Metamorphoses of Ovid in Roundels by Isaac de Bensérade (1676).

The scene relates the sad adventure of Dercete: the great beauty of this goddess aroused the jealousy of Venus who, in revenge, inspired her with a violent love for a young priest. Dercete, after having a daughter (Semiramis) by him, conceived she was so ashamed of her weakness that she killed her lover, took her child to a desert place, then threw herself into a lake where she was transformed into a fish. We see her here being transformed.

The other fish would be the magician Naïs, who enchanted men and changed them into fish, and which ends itself in this aspect.

Although there does not seem to be a link between the two adventures except for their identical end, Ovid brings them together in the same fable, and the engraver has followed the example of the poet.
