An attractive antique Japanese blue and white porcelain lidded bowl, made at Arita during the Edo period, ca 1800.
The set consists of a deep bowl with fitted cover. It is finely decorated in underglaze blue with dense scrolling lotus flowers and foliage, bordered by stylised wave or cloud patterns. The interior of both the bowl and saucer contains a circular medallion depicting a young boy holding a flower or auspicious attribute.
The underside of the bowl and the lid has a six-character mark which probably reads:
五良大甫 呉祥瑞造
Gorōdayū Go Shonzui zō
