A Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain covered box, attributed to the Edo period, decorated in Shonzui style.
The rectangular body has softly rounded corners and stands on a raised rectangular foot. Its broad, sloping cover features a raised rectangular centre, giving the box a distinctive architectural profile.
Both the body and cover are painted in underglaze cobalt blue with an intricate arrangement of patterned panels, including interlocking fretwork, overlapping scales, fine geometric diaper designs and circular floral medallions. Slender brown lines accentuate the contours, while the white-glazed interior provides a quiet contrast to the richly decorated exterior.
