Arms of Marchant and Gallart Accollé? Qianlong period, ca 1750-1760

Sharing with you this highly unusual Chinese porcelain dish of large size. Top Quality Blue and white porcelain from the Qianlong period.

Large dish, 35CM, part of a dinner service with six dishes and plates in three known sizes (42 cm,35cm and two slightly smaller).
The two largest dishes are known to have been in the possession of related families from western Flanders for a long time: the Van Leynseele family (Kortrijkand Avelgem, 19th century), the De Roo family (Gent, 19th century; Ruiselede and Tielt (18th century) and the Gilliodts and Van Nete families from Brugge in the 18th century. According to the present owners the plates have been within these families since the beginning of the 19th century. Family tradition has it that an officer brought them from China. Western Flanders was close to Zeeland and this order might have been placed with the voc Chamber Zeeland in Middelburg.

The decoration is identical to that of another service (see pictures) the previous service. The armorial design is similar with an asymmetrical cartouche in rococo style and the same dexter arms (on a stippled/gold background three stars) but with different arms accollé: on a stippled background a bird or dove with a leafy olive branch in its beak, standing on a base. The design differs very slightly with a flower festoon underneath the dexter shield and minor differences in the edging of the rococo cartouche.

The sinister arms were borne by many Dutch families, at least 14 duringthe18th century,induding Ga(i)ilart (Dutch East indies), Hilarius (Batavia), Peijse (Amsterdam), Slaterus (Goor, Ootmarsum), Columba (Middelburg), Heijblom (Gelderland), Bosmans, Dorisla/Van Dooreslaar (Zutphen), Den Exter, Ebeling (Amsterdam), Lacoste (Amsterdam), Schulitze (Cape Colony), Tullenius or Vullenius, Van den Toorn (The Hague) and finally the Haak family (Amsterdam). However, none of these families can be linked with the Greven family, who possibly bare the dexter arms and ommismoned the service in the previous entry. Neverthelcss, there are two other families bearing these arms which are related by marnage. first, Gallart and Marchant and second, Boom and Haak(e).

The first couple, the Reverend Ds. Petrus Marchant and Johanna Magdalena Gallart,marriodin Bataviabetween 1755 and 1758. The Reverend Ds. Petrus Marchant (born Amsterdam, 1729; buried Batavia, 16 May 1758) studied theolagy in Leiden in 1753 and shortiy after joined the ministry in Amsterdam. On 5 November 1753 he was confirmed as a minister for the indische dienst or the East Indies, after which he was appointed minister to the Dutch Reformed Church in Batavia in 25 Fcbruary 1755. After a month he gave his first sermon there (23 March); his wages were modestamounting to HFL130a month in 1756. Unfortunatcly, he died at the young age of 29 in his house at the Spinhuisgracht and was buried in the Dutch Church in Batavia on 16 M2y 1758. Juhanna Magdalens Gallart (buried Batavia, 23 or 24 March 1763), was from Amsterdam like her husband. She was the daughter of Michiel Gallart (died 1742) and his (probably second) wife Anna Margaretha Môüller (1687-1737). In 1737 Michiel was head of establishment of the Gelria Castle in Paliacatta or Pulicat, but a couple of years later (1740) he was again in Amsterdam holding the post of canon of the Oudmunster Chapter in Utrecht. He was the first in his family with a seal bearing the arms ofa dove and olive branch, as can also be seen on the tombstones of his wives in Negapatnam (1723) and Pulicat (1737). Petrus Marchant was Johanna Gallart’s third husband and after her marriage to Petrus she married twice more,both times in Batavia, first to Mattheus Warnar Bleeker (died 1761) on 4 November 1758 and second, to Hendrik Carl Zurmegede (1713-1767) in 1761. The latter also ordered an armorial service (cat. no. 167). It is not clear whether Ds. Petrus Marchant was related to the Marchant families of Leiden and Haarlembearingthearmswiththestars. Petrus’ arms are unrecorded. The armigerous members of the Marchant family belonged to the wealthier echelons of society, with Nicolaas Marchant in Leiden around 1745 and Dionysius Marchant (1732-1819) as a silk merchant, alderman (1789) and voc director (1790) in Haarlem. In 1768 he married Johanna Maria Koning (1743-1814) from Amsterdam, buttheyhad no children.

The second couple who might have ordered this armorial service were Gerard Boom and Maria Haake from Rotterdam. As a wine merchant Heer Gerard Boom was the principal of the wine merchants” guild in Rotterdam, from 1763 at the earliest until after 1772. His wife Maria Haake was possiblyrelatedtothe Haak family from Amsterdam, ofwhomin1722 the paper merchant Engelbert Haak bore an armorial with a chicken-like bird. There were also more wine merchants named Boom in Amsterdam, such as Harmanus Boom in 1742 and Gerhard Jan Boom in 1773.
